This week's Tuesdays with Dorie recipe, from the cookbook Baking: From My Home to Yours by Dorie Greenspan, is Cherry Rhubarb Cobbler, can be found on page 415, and was chosen by Amanda from Like Sprinkles on a Cupcake. The photo at the left shows the cobbler assembled and ready for the oven in all its rustic glory.
I was able to find both fresh sweet cherries and fresh rhubarb with no problem, so the recipe went together just like Dorie said it would, and turned out wonderfully well. I didn't make any changes, just stuck to her basic recipe and followed it word-for-word. (Each week the person who selects the recipe for the week puts the recipe on her/his site, should you wish to try one or two before purchasing the book. So, you can click on Amanda's site above for the recipe this week. The book is well worth the purchase.)
We liked the cute little dough dollops on top of the fruit, and the combination of unbleached flour, whole wheat flour, and ginger in them was really nice. Very easy, very tasty, very popular. The dough browned nicely and the juicy sauce thickened during the 50 minutes of baking time, leaving the fruit with a pleasing little resistance, not at all mushy. The dishware is a little messy, but the dessert was deliciously perfect. I had mine warm with a little ice cream, the guys wanted me to whip cream for theirs.
We ate half of the 8 by 8 dish and sent the other half over to Ron and Sue and the boys as Dorie indicated it was best the day it was baked. Heedless of this advice, Mark and Matt each kept one small bowl of it for breakfast. (Actually, they would have done more damage to it on the first run had they not been to the county fair earlier in the evening, making their way through various food lines and hopping into the car with gigantic elephant ears and chocolate shakes for the road. Good thing fair is only once a year is all I can say. I don't know how they were going to sleep at night.)
I would definitely make this recipe again, and as far as Sue's family's opinion, she may just weigh in here in the comment section, although she tends to be rather shy about doing that usually. It takes something really powerful, like last week's chocolate pudding, to bring out her braver side!
The last photo, is of course, my favorite little small bowl and the ice cream scoops were made with the tool to make melon balls, so if you are judging portion size, etc., keep that in mind. (And, to my friend CC who has been asking if these small portions are for Mark and the boys: No, I am not serving "poor Mark" the "Barbie portions" over here and putting him on a "starvation diet." These little ones are my servings, the guys all help themselves to one, or two, regular size portions. So kind of you to think of them, CC. So far, it doesn't look like they are starving. And, yes, you can have a double portion when you are here.)
